Obituary of Martha Brandt Schroeder
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon March 25 for Mrs. John Schroeder of Castalia, Iowa who passed away Monday morning. The rites will be held at the Walter Schultz home in Castalia at 1:30 p.m. and at Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia at 2:00 p.m..Burial will be in Castalia. The Schutte Funeral service is in charge.
Marth Brandt Schroeder was born on October 23, 1874 at Garnavillo, Iowa,the daughter of Gottlieb Brandt and his wife,Maria Hartmann Brandt.She was baptized as an infant and confirmed as an adult.
While a small child her parents moved to a farm in Grand Meadow Township,Postville.
On December 30,1892, she was married to John Schroeder of Postville.Seven children were born to this union.They farmed in the Postville community until 1903 when they bought a farm near Castalia. They farmed there until they moved to Castalia in the fall of 1930. It was soon after this,on January 10,1931 that her husband passed away.
During the last two years she failed in health and lived with her children in the vicinity of Castalia and Nora Springs. It was while at Walter Schultz,that she passed away on Monday March 22. She had lived a full life of 79 years,four months and 27 days.
Surviving are two sons,Louis Brandt of Postville,and Herbert Schroeder of Castalia; five daughters,Emma,Mrs.. W.C. Koenig;Elsie,Mrs. Walter Schultz,Castalia; Selma,Mrs. Alvin Nuehring,Nora Springs;Florence,Mrs. Edward Preuss,Castalia; 29 grandchildren;67 great grandchildren;two brothers;John Brandt,Clermont and Charles Brandt,Fort Atkinson; and one sister,Mrs. Charles Behrens, Fort Atkinson.She was preceded in death by her parents,her husband;a daughter Ruth who passed away on April 24, 1935 whose three small children she helped rear;four grandchildren;four sisters and five brothers.

I have this same identical obituary and it is from the Postville Herald newspaper. One daughter was left out by the typist. In the obituary, it is listed "Emma, Mrs. W. C. Koenig, Castalia; Clara, Mrs. Emil Arndt, Nora Springs; Elsie, Mrs. Walter Schultz, Castalia;" and so on.Also, Martha's surviving sister is Mrs. Christine Behrens, Fort Atkinson and her daughter Ruth passed away on April 24, 1931 and she is listed as Mrs. Ruth Weaver in her father's obituary.
The Arndt's are in my Schave family tree and a family member brought these "errors" to my attention.
