Alton Rue

Funeral services for Alton Rue of Ridgeway were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway with Pastor Phillip Olson and Pastor Ginny Olson officiating.

Interment was in Lincoln Cemetery rural Ridgeway. Pallbearers were: Denny Beaumont, Ray Elder, Allen Hauber, Maynard Hovden, Roger Kratz, and Darryl Rue. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Because of advancing Alzheimer's disease, Alton spent the last few months of his life at the Patty Elwood Center and the Evans Home in Cresco where he died on December 17, 2002.

Alton Rudolph Rue was born May 22, 1918 in Lincoln Township, Winneshiek County, the son of Louis and Inga (Hovden) Rue. He was baptized into the Christian faith on June 23, 1918 at Lincoln Lutheran Church, where on May 22, 1932 he confirmed his faith. When he was 16, Alton graduated from Ridgeway High School in the class of 1935. From the age of 16 he worked in the poultry house in Ridgeway to save money to buy the farm next to his home place.

On January 28, 1950 he married Audrey Kelly at St. Bridget's Church near Bluffton. Even though they moved to town to retire in 1987, he was at the farm every day to help the boys.

He was an avid sports fan, but in particular of baseball. He played on the Ridgeway town baseball team.

He served as township trustee in Lincoln Township and on the election board. He was a member of Lincoln and Peace Lutheran churches and served on the congregational councils of both churches. For many years, he was a member of the Lincoln Cemetery Association Board. He loved to ride horses and was a member of the Winneshiek County Saddle Club. He served on the county ASCS Board. He was a member of the Elks in Decorah.

He loved to play cards and attend farm auctions.

He is survived by his wife Audrey; three sons: Harold and Kelvin of Ridgeway, and Tony Heinzman of Apple Valley, CA; one daughter: Linda Murphy of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother: Irvin of Cresco; and one sister: Pearl Hoagland of Waterloo.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Garvin and Harold; and one sister: Arlene Beaumont.
