Page 6Guilford Street, Hesper Friends pastor, dies
The Rev. Guilford Street, 81, pastor at Hesper Friends Church since 1969, died Sunday morning, Oct. 7 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.
The Rev. Street was born Sept. 21,1898, in Winneshiek County to Oscar and Minnie (White) Street. He attended Hesper School and graduated from Mabel High School.
In 1922 he enrolled in William Penn College at Oskaloosa where he married Iva Quaintance on Aug. 29,1922.
He taught schools and also was superintendent of schools at several southern Iowa locations until 1930 when he entered the ministry.
He served churches in Heartland and Center, la. as well as other towns in southern Iowa before coming to Hesper in 1969.
Pastor Street began losing his sight before 1950 and when he assumed the pastorate of the Friends Church, he was totally blind. In later years he was assistant pastor with his son Clair and later with the present pastor David Runyon. He also wrote "Street Corners" for Decorah newspapers, a column of reminiscences of earlier days.
Clair Street and his wife were killed in an auto accident early this year. His wife died November 20, 1969 and three brothers also preceded him in death.
Pastor Street is survived by a son Keith of Wapello, la., four grandchildren, and a brother Merrill Street of Golden, Colo. and a sister Mrs. Harold (Grace) Byers of Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Hesper Friends Church with ministers Malcolm Macy and Mr. Runyon officiating. Pallbearers were Harold and Douglas Street, Robert, and John Street, Vern Wienmann and Robert Tracy.
Arrangements were made by Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, Minn.
