Funeral services for Thelma Barker were held Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church at Frankville, Iowa. The Reverend Gary Catterson officiated. The organist was Darlene Winkie. The Casket Bearers were: Ray Barker, Paul Howard, Jim Howard, Jim Bulman, Zachary Bulman, Joe Howard, Brandon Hanson. Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.
Thelma Ileta Barker was born July 3, 1918, to Herman Charles and America Jane (Smith) Barker, at Sand Cove, Allamakee County, near New Albin, Iowa. She moved to Frankville, Iowa with her parents when she was 8 years old. Thelma passed away Monday, February 27, 2006, in the Franciscan-Skemp Health Care Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She was 87 years old.
Thelma liked to hang around her father’s general store as well as to attend ice cream socials and play with her sister and brothers. She also belonged to a 4-H group and always attended Sunday School.
Thelma and her family lived on a farm south of Frankville and later she moved into town. She had attended a rural school at New Albin, the Frankville School until 10th grade and then graduated from Postville High School in 1937. She continued her education at Upper Iowa University in Fayette in Elementary Education and graduated on August 8, 1968.
Thelma went into the teaching profession and taught both in the rural and public school system. She began her career at the Waterville School in 1950, teaching there for 33 years. She retired in 1983.
Thelma became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon on September 28, 2004.
Thelma enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and cross-stitching.
Surviving is a brother, Verl Barker, a sister-in-law, Rose Barker, both of Waukon, several nieces and one nephew.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Lloyd and Warren, and two sisters, Beulah Barker and Frances and Everett Wallace, and a nephew, Keith Wallace.
She was a member of the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville.
