PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Brayton and Martha Rockwood Whitney, natives of the state of New York, married there and came west in 1857. They first settled in Wisconsin, near the town of Watertown. In 1861 he enlisted in the Company B 29th Wis. Volunteer Infantry and later he was transferred to the 16th Ohio Light Artillery. After three years of loyal service he received his discharge and returned to Watertown. He was also a sailor for many years on the Great Lakes, his run between Oswego and Chicago, when it was yet Fort Dearborn. In the year 1867 they came to Hesper township. He purchased a farm in Section 18, where they lived all the rest of their lives. He and his wife became the parents of seven children.
