PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
William Mitchell was born in Armagh, Ireland, December 24, 1808, at which place he was married. In 1832 he and his wife came to America. The year 1850 they came from New York to McHenry county, Illinois, but stayed there only four years, then with his family, consisting of himself, wife and three girls and three boys, he came to Iowa and settled on the southeast quarter of Section 16, Hesper township. In politics he was a strong Democrat, and his religion was that of a Presbyterian. His son, Thomas, settled on a part of the old homestead, where he continued to live until his death. He married Mary Louis Fawcett, daugshter of John and Phoebe Fawcett. They were given three children.
