PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
Fred Sellman came with his parents to Hesper township when a young man, settled on a farm now owned by Fred Foltz. He was born in Berlin, Prussia, Germany, March 1849. In 1857 he came to Ontario, Canada, where he lived three years before coming to Winneshiek county. After growing to manhood, he married Anna Ruffridge, a native of Canada. She came to America with her parents at the age of 19 years and they settled near Locust on the farm now owned by Henry Ruffridge. Fred and his wife took up a claim in Hesper township, where they lived the greater part of their lives. They lived to celebrate 62 years of toils and pleasures of life's journey. They were given five children, two sons and three daughters: Henry and Ed of Decorah, Iowa; Mrs. Ed Darrington of Mabel, and Mrs. Charlie Casterton of Highland township, and Mrs. Charles Haberly, deceased.
