PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
Chalkey S. Haines was born at Westfield, Indiana on January 5, 1840. At the age of 17 years he left Westfield and came to Hesper. His father was married twice, and by the two marriages had fifteen children. After his arrival at Hesper, he worked, and here he met Miss Emily Harkness, whom he married August 24, 1870. They started life's journey together at Hesper and later moved to Fillmore county. To this union were born three children: Frank, Lida Carpenter, both deceased and Elmer who lives at Mabel. They were members of the Society of Friends, but later joined the Methodiat church.
