PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Oliver Kenyon, a pioneer farmer, was born in the state of New York, February 10, 1822. He resided there for ten years, then moved to Ohio where he married Levina Hazel in 1845. Together with three children they came as emigrants to Iowa in a covered wagon in 1855. They spent five weeks on the road. Decorah was their last over night stop; staying there one night, they finished their jouney the following day and settled in Hesper township on a farm of 180 acres in Section 27. There were eight children born to this union: Anna, who married Ira J Reed; Newton; Sarah, who married James Smalley; Rosa, the wife of Nicholas Richert; and Emma, Mrs. Clark Fredenburg, and Henry all of whom are now deceased. The remaining children are Amanda, Mrs. Ed Watts, of Hesper township; and Perry of Mabel, Minn., who owns the farm on which his father settled, and it is now being carried on by his son, the third generation.
