PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Walter A. Smith was born October 29, 1833, in England, son of Andrew and Eliza Fenn Smith. He was a silk weaver by trade and while still a young man he emigrated to the United States, and settled in Winneshiek county. At the time of their arrival the country was not explored to a great extent, wild deer and other wild animals were to be seen frequently. Samantha S. Hazel was born near Suffields, Ohio, May 17, 1840, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hazel. They were of Pennsylvania Dutch. Samantha came to the neighborhood of Hesper in the year 1854. In 1859 she married Mr. Smith. Together they cleared the land on the southeast Section 22 which was the Smith homestead until just a few years ago, when it was sold, Together on his farm they toiled and raised a family of ten children, six of whom are still living. They are Mrs. H. C. Rowe, Mrs. W. M. Griswold, Charlie and Robert, all residents of Hesper; and Mrs. John Richert, of Decorah and Frank of Canton. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were good Advent people, bringing up their children in the Advent faith, belonging to the A. C. church of Burr Oak. In 1897 Mr. Smith answered the final summons at the age of 64, while Mrs. Smith reached the age of 84 years, passing on March 15, 1925.
