PIONEER DAYS - HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Benjamin Franklin Newcomer was born in the state of Indiana in the year 1839. There he married Mary Hamlin, daughter of John and Lydia Hamlin, natives of Ohio, born there in 1835. The year 1857 they came to Minnesota, in company with Mrs. Newcomer's sister and Benjamin's older brother, all coming in a covered wagon and oxen. They purchased land from the government. A farm near Ricefore, Minn., was their next home until they sold and came to Hesper township, purchased a farm in Section 13. Six children were given to them: Alma and Alpha, who both died at the age of three years, Ida Griswold, Hesper; Vernon, Fayette; Nettie Haines, Lake Wales, Florida; and Charlie of North Dakota.
