PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Cyrus Wellington will be remembered not only in Hesper, but throughout Winneshiek county, also Minnesota. In about 1870 he practiced law in Decorah. The year 1876 he and Charles P. Brown became partners in law. They won great distinction as criminal lawyers in their defense of Helen Stckles who was charged with murdering her husband. This trial brought Cyrus Wellington before the public. He also held the office of district attorney. From Decorah he went to St. Paul, Minn., and became the attorney of the Great Northern road. In his later years he became blind and died some time after.
