PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Thomas Painter was married to Mary Cleveland in the state of Ohio. Mrs. Painter was born in North Carolina on the 28th of December 1800. She moved with her parents to Highland county, Ohio, when but a small child. After her marriage to Mr. Painter, the young couple moved to Green county, Indiana. In the course of the spring of 1856 they came among the Friends from Indiana to Iowa, settling in Hesper township near the Highland and Hesper township line. Later they moved into the village. Their faith was that of the Friends. Mary Painter answered the final summons in her 90th year, having survived her husband seventeen years.
