PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941

Fordyce Worth was born in the state of Vermont in 1831, and received his early education there. In 1848 he went to Mt. Gilead, Morrow county, Ohio, where he engaged himself as an apprentice in a machine shop for two years. He then engaged in the lumber trade in Wisconsin, remaining there three years. In the year 1852 he commenced the study of medicine and in 1856 came to Winneshiek county, where he bought property and opened an establishment of general merchandise. In 1859 he went to Chicago, where he attended the Bennett Medical college. In 1870 he graduated from this college and came to Hesper, where he practiced until his health compelled him to retire. He received the appointment of postmaster in October 1871, suceeding Dr. W. C. Battey, who was the first postmaster. He was a member of A. F. and A M. Decorah Lodge No. 181. He was married in 1856 to Miss Sattie Keys at Muscatine, Iowa, and they were given two children. Alice Edmonds, now deceased and Henry, who lives at La Crosse, Wis. His first wife died and he remarried again to Dr. Louisa Day.
