PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
George N. Hollway was born in Sandwich, Mass., 1826. He received his education at Sandwich and Providence. Coming to Iowa in 1852 he made his permanent settement in Hesper. He soon afterwards became identified with the political affairs of the county. He was first elected county assessor. He was elected to the office of county treasurer in 1865, and county superintendent of schools in 1874, succeeding H. Toye. In 1859 he was a candidate against Judge D. H. Hughes and L. D. Griswold, and was defeated by a small margin. He probably did more than any other citizen, for the advancement of the educational interests of the county. In 1882, he was engaged in mining in one of the western territories.
