PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
Stephen Hiatt, son of Eliel and Mary Hiatt, was born in Hamilton county, Indiana, on the 25th day of December, 1834, where his father owned a small farm and worked at shoemaking. Stephen lived at the home of his parents until the age of fourteen, when, being the oldest of several children, he went to provide for himself. In 1853 he bought a yoke of oxen and spent his time in logging until 1855. On the 11th day of August, 1853, he was married to Almira Hamlin, daughter of John and Lydia Hamlin, born in Stark county, Ohio, February 6th, 1836. In the fall of 1855 Stephen and his wife with their first born, a son fourteen months old, started for Winneshiek county with three yoke of oxen and one wagon. They arrived in Hesper in October and settled on a farm near the present village. Here they resided for a number of years, then moving to Minnesota. Seven children were born to this union: Charles, Clara, John, and Nellie, all of whom are now deceased. The living children are Etta Harkness of Mabel, Any Haines, Owatonna, Minn. and Stephen W. Jr., Gainsville, Florida.
