PIONEER DAYS-HESPER TOWNSHIP 1851-1941
James McMillen was born in New York, October 3, 1832, and came to Iowa with his parents, at the age of 20. His wife, the former Nancy McNaughten, was born March 7, 1838 in Pennsylvania. She was of Pennsylvania Dutch, and came with her parents to Winneshiek county. In the spring of 1864 she and James McMillen were married. All their married life was spent on the home farm in Hesper township. James owned two hundred and forty acres of land, which had been secured by his father from the government. They were parents of eigth children. Anna, the wife of Fred Koppen, is the only child that now resides in Hesper township. John conducts a grocery store at Canton, Minn., and other children live in Dakota.
