Classed among the earliest pioneers of Hesper township were the Battey's. At one time there were nine different Battey's in Hesper township. Nicholas Battey came to Hesper township in the year 1856, and settled on a farm on Looking Glass Praire, now the farm of Valentine Stoskopf. Martha Hoag, his wife, was a native of Starksboro Addison county, Vermont, born there December 10, 1818. They were married in April 1837. To this union seven children were born, the oldest dying in infancy, George J., Mary E., Lydia H., Lois T., Joel, and Richard grew to maturity. Mary married Mr. Updegraffand, Lydia married Daniel Bowerman, Lois died a missionary among the Indians in North Carolina. George, Joel and Richard were all Congregational ministers. On September 1, 1891, Nicholas passed to his reward. In 1894 his widow went to Salem, Oregon to live with her two daughters, who were living there, and where she spent the remaining years of her life, passing away March 27, 1905 at the age of 86 years.
