Horace Williams was born in Batavia, New York, in 1822. In 1837 he and his two brothers went to Michigan where they settled in Ingham county. Together they bought 1700 acres of land and built a saw mill and flouring mill. He later entered the mercantile business, but soon afterwards opened a law office and was admitted to practice there until 1857. He traveled through Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa and located in Hesper township in 1858. In 1860 he married Caroline Tabor, daughter of Russel Tabor. In the year 1881 she died, leaving six children, three sons and three daughters. At the time of her death she was laid to rest on their farm. Later the remain were moved to the family lot in Hesper cemetery. Mr. Williams was an excellent gardener and his farm home was one of the finest in Winneshiek county. The front garden was elegantly arranged in circular double hedge, well trimmed in solid Dutch style making a fine carriage driveway with a center walk to the house and with in the hedge were tastefully arranged evergreens of every variety.

He was elected four times to represent the district in the state legislature. He was a member of the legal profession of the state of Iowa and also had some of the finest libraries in the state. L. H. Talbert later settled on the William farm and he also kept a very fine lawn with well trimmed hedges and flower gardens. The farm today will be recognized as the Molstad farm, next to the Minnesota and Iowa state line.
