Wilhelm J. Akkermann
June 11, 1937 - December 31, 2015

Wilhelm Juern Akkermann was born to Albert and Trintje (Hilger) Akkermann on June 11, 1937, in Greetsiel, Germany. He passed away on December 31st at 7:24 a.m. at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa, after a brief battle with cancer.

The second of four children, Wilhelm was raised in extremely difficult conditions during World War II. The captain of his team, he LOVED soccer. He was educated in construction and bricklaying.

On January 8, 1955, Wilhelm embarked from Bremerhaven, Germany, on the S.S. AMERICA and arrived at the Port of New York on January 17, 1955. At that time, he went to live with and help his dad’s sister and her husband, Aunt Theda and Uncle Fred Van Gerpen, on a farm near Buffalo Center, Iowa.

On March 14, 1958, Wilhelm married Ruth (Tiedens) Akkermann. To their union were born five children: Juern, Joe, Susan, Theda, and Linda.

Wilhelm worked in many places throughout the years including in the maintenance department at Winnebago Industries. In 2008, he was able to travel to Germany to see his family there one last time. As an adult, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior.

Wilhelm loved rock candy in his tea, red cabbage, windmill cookies, and calls from his sister, Almuth, who lived in Germany. He cherished her! He, also, enjoyed making homemade ice cream at Christmas time. Always wanting to be on time, he, usually, arrived very early wherever he went.

Wilhelm was preceded in death by his parents; his father- and mother-in-law, George and Stena Jutting; his brother, Albert Akkermann; his brothers-in-law, Ade Baumann and Vernie Boomgarden; his nephew, Walter Looden; his niece, Marilyn Irons; and his grandson, Jeremiah Hill.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Ruth Akkermann; his five children and their spouses: Juern (Helen) Akkermann, Joe (Pam) Akkermann, Susan (Dennis) Kearney, Theda (Scott) Wistrik, and Linda (Don) Cooper; twenty grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren including three sets of twins; his sister, Almuth Baumann; a brother, Juern (Helga) Akkermann; and his in-laws, Waltraut Akkermann, Stella Boomgarden, Kenny and Margaret Irons, David and Mary Tiedens, Roger and Bev Jutting, Howard and Birdene Jutting, and Jerry and Janet Jutting; as well as by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral plans are pending. The burial of cremains will be held at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City, Iowa.
