Ferne Y. (Ellingson) Coxson
(August 22, 1928 - August 26, 2015)

Buffalo Center, Iowa

Ferne (Ellingson) Coxson, 87, of rural Buffalo Center, Iowa, died on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at her home.

Ferne Yvonne (Ellingson) Coxson was born at home in rural Winnebago County, Iowa, on August 22, 1928, to Oscar and Emma (Evenson) Ellingson. She was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minnesota. In 1937, her “little sister,” Bonnie, was born. In 1938, her family moved to Buffalo Center, Iowa. After graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1946, she attended Luther College.

On June 13, 1948, Ferne married Richard G. Coxson, the love of her life, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center. They lived in Decorah and Estherville, Iowa, before moving to Lakewood and later Bellflower, California. During their years in California, they, also, had the opportunity to live in Hawaii for a few years. They retired to rural Buffalo Center in 1992.

Ferne and Richard were blessed with eight children: Pam (David) Fairley, Jan (Bill) Lynch, Alan (Mary) Coxson, Philip Coxson, Debbie (Ted) Hack, Ruth (Rob) Menagh, Tom (Linda) Coxson, and Rob (Grace) Coxson; thirteen grandchildren: Eugene, Theresa (Dan), Deborah (Aaron), Christine (Clint), Melissa (Baltimore), Allison (Tien), Lindsey, Shannon, Colleen, John, Laurie, Jennie and Jessica; and eight great grandchildren: Jordan, Grant, Ethan, Kendall, Colby, Kaiden, Jaxson and Logan.

Ferne loved being with family and friends and remembered them with cards on all their special occasions. She loved putting together jigsaw puzzles, reading and exchanging books with friends, solving Jumble word puzzles, correcting Dick’s Sudoku puzzles, and doing crossword puzzles. She prepared wonderful meals for family and friends on every holiday and whenever company came. In addition, she found a special joy in her flower garden and in the birds that visited her yard.

Anyone who ever met Ferne will testify that she was kind, loving, generous, and welcoming, in short, the quintessential mom and grandma. She, always, put her family first, and she considered everyone family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Emma Ellingson; her step-mother, Lois; her daughter, Ruth Menagh; and her great-grandson, Jordan Larson.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends but will forever remain within our hearts and memories.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, September 4, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 183 – 2nd Avenue E, Thompson, Iowa, 50478, with Pastor Lynn Noel officiating. Visitation will, also, be at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday evening. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery, Buffalo Center, Iowa. Memorials preferred to Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson, Iowa.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal,
Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”
