Amery Ellsworth Charlson
October 15th, 1917 - August 27th, 2015

SWEA CITY - Amery Ellsworth Charlson, a son of Irving and Oliva (Morem) Charlson, was born on October 15, 1917, in Forest City. He passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City at the age of 97.

Amery received his education in the Forest City schools.

On his birthday, October 15, 1947, Amery married Vivian Maxine Westerberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. They, then, made their home in Fertile. In 1948, they moved to Forest City, and Amery was employed in various hardware stores as an electrician. Later on, he worked for the City of Forest City at the Forest City Power Plant as a lineman. Then, they moved to Swea City and purchased the former Tweeten Hardware Store in 1957. In 1969, they sold the store, and Amery went to work for the Swea City schools as the head custodian. Next, he was employed at the Great Plains Lumber Company for seven years before he retired. Not wanting to completely stop working, however, he continued doing electrical and carpentry work, and he enjoyed delivering RVs for Winnebago Industries.

In their leisure time, Amery and Vivian enjoyed traveling, camping, and fishing. In addition, they took a great deal of pleasure in a cabin they built in 1966 on Tuttle Lake near Dolliver and enjoyed wintering in Texas, Florida, and California. Amery, also, liked woodworking, and he had a loom for weaving rugs and placemats. In October of 2012, they moved to Forest Plaza Assisted Living in Forest City where they enjoyed reacquainting themselves with Forest City relatives and friends and meeting new ones.

Amery was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Lions and Commercial Clubs, and the Senior Center in Swea City.

Those left to cherish Amery's memory include his wife, Vivian, of Forest City; his children: Andy Charlson, and his wife, Cindy, of New Bremen, Ohio, Nancy Lenhart, and her husband, Vaughn, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Mark Charlson, and his wife, Lucretia, of Plainfield, Illinois; his grandchildren: Melissa Torres, Erica Deren, Neal and Drew Charlson, and Molly and William Lenhart; his great-grandchildren: Joshua and Alexis Torres and Julian and Emilee Deren; and his sister, Mavis Berhow, and her husband, Marvin, of Dakota City; as well as three sisters- and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

Amery was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Oliva Charlson; his sister, Irene Holland, and his brother, Willard Charlson.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 31, 2015, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Swea City, with Pastor Rusty Bailey officiating. Visitation will be from10:00 to 11:00 a.m., Monday, at the church only. Interment will follow in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.
