November 4, 1935 - March 23, 2015

Marvin D. Monson, 79, of Forest City, died on Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Hancock Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.

Marvin Dennis Monson was born on November 4, 1935, to Carl and Fern (Fogue) Monson. He grew up on a farm North of Leland and graduated from Lake Mills High School. On July 30, 1954, he married Jackie McColloch. They made their home in Forest City where they raised their four children.

Marvin served in the United States Army as a medic during the post-Korean War period. Following his military service, he worked for twelve years for the State Highway Commission. He and Jackie, then, owned and operated Monson Appliance in Lake Mills for two years. After moving back to Forest City, Marvin worked for Winnebago Industries for nineteen and a half years, ending his career as Winnebago’s Director of Service. During this time, he also owned and operated the M & J Car Wash. After retiring from Winnebago Industries, he continued to run the car wash in addition to serving as a bus driver for the Forest City Community Schools for seventeen years.

An active member of the American Legion and the Forest City Fire Department (twenty-one years), Marvin served on the Board of Adjustment for the City of Forest City and as a Ducks Unlimited Sponsor. In addition, he was recognized as Volunteer of the Year for the Bear Creek Golf Course Back 9 Project.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Marvin, greatly, enjoyed going to stock car races with his good friends. He and Jackie enjoyed making trips to Germany where their son, Craig, was serving in the Army. In addition, they, also, traveled to Portugal, Switzerland, and Austria. Moreover, Marvin cherished family events, and he loved cheering on his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with their many activities.

For fourteen years, Marvin and Jackie enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Arizona. He, also, liked his special seat at Schnebly’s where he’d spend many hours catching up on the town news, not to mention the time he spent with his wonderful group of Hardee’s & Bill’s breakfast-clubbers. Marvin loved the teams at his alma mater, the Lake Mills Bulldogs. He felt proud watching his Lake Mills granddaughters participating in many sports there. A huge fan of the Forest City Indians, he, also, attended their sporting events. Go Big Red, and Go Marv!!!

Marvin is survived by his wife, Jackie; his four children, Robin (Jeff) Nelson, Julie (Mark) Pueggel, Craig (Valerie) Monson, and Teresa (Bryce) Duit; fourteen grandchildren, Emily (Brandon) Bjoraker; Lucas, Trey, and Payton Duit; Syreeta (Josh) Groves; Stacy and Travis John; Becky (Mike) Madison; Cristy, Sammy, and Darcy Nelson; Mark (Courtney) Pueggel; and Andrew (Bethany) and Isaiah Monson; and eighteen great grandchildren; as well as his brother, Roger Monson; and his sisters, Bonnie Berndt, Carol Engstler, and Arlene Bryson.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Fern, and his sister, Maxine Bolton.
