March 20, 1926 - October 30, 2014Forest City, Iowa – Dale A. Nerdig, 88, of Forest City, died on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa.
Dale A. Nerdig was born on March 20, 1926, in rural Rake, Iowa, a son of August and Fern (Wentworth) Nerdig. He attended country school and then Rake High School, graduating in 1943. On February 21, 1948, he married Elaine Anderson at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake, Iowa. To this union, four children were born. Dale farmed for many years in the Rake and Thompson areas before moving to Forest City in 1969 when he started working for Winnebago Industries. He worked there until he retired in 1989. For many years, Dale was also a faithful volunteer at the Forest City food bank.
An avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, Dale enjoyed watching sports, and he loved playing baseball. In his younger years, he played on the Rake High School team and then with numerous town baseball teams in the area. Dale, also, loved to fish. Indeed, after retiring, he took many fishing trips to northern Minnesota.
Dale treasured his family. Over the years, he enjoyed attending many wonderful family gatherings and, in particular, his grandchildren’s events. Dale was a long-time faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dale is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Forest City; his children, Linda (Don) Gruis, of Buffalo Center, Vickie Swanson, of Forest City, Roger (Linda) Nerdig, of Algona, and Lori (Dave) Schlitter, of Spring Valley, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Alison (Nick) Bailey, Angie (Tim) DeWaard, Shari and Jason Gruis, Kelli (Verne) Hecker, Amber (Scott) Kollasch, Sarah (Seth) McChesney, Michael Schlitter, Emily Schlitter, and her special friend, Soren Grandall, and Matthew Swanson, and his special friend, Jenna Hagen; his great-grandchildren, Ryan and Kelsey Bailey, Tyler and Alyssa DeWaard and baby boy McChesney, due February 2015; his brother, Harvey (Rosie) Nerdig, of Buffalo Center; and his sisters-in-law, Beverly and Joyce Anderson, Sharon Nerdig, and Mavis Rasmussen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Larry Nerdig; and one brother and one sister in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 3, 2014, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M., Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, Iowa. Interment will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Dale Nerdig memorial fund.
