Betty Osmundson
May 24, 1925 - October 12, 2014

Surrounded by family, Betty Arlene (Helgren) Osmundson, 89, of Alexandria, Minnesota, formerly of Thompson, passed away on October 12, 2014, at the Douglas County Hospital

Born in Thompson on May 24, 1925, to Clarence (C.B.) and Grace (Myers) Helgren, Betty graduated from Thompson High School in 1942 and entered Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City. After graduating from the Secretarial Course, she moved to Denver, Colorado, to work and to enjoy the single life living with four other friends. However, she, soon, realized that she and her high school sweetheart, Bruce Osmundson, who had entered the Army Air Force, were meant to spend their lives together. On July 30, 1944, they married and made their first home in McAllen, Texas, where Bruce was stationed.

Following Bruce’s military service, they returned to Thompson where their children, Sandra and Scott, were born and where both worked at Peoples State Bank – a family business. Betty could utilize her secretarial skills and learn banking and insurance as well. She served on the Board of Directors and would become Vice President at the bank in later years before they retired in 1989. During their retirement, they spent their winters in Harlingen, Texas, and their summers in Iowa. As they aged and their health declined, they moved in March of 2012 into assisted living at Grand Arbor in Alexandria, Minnesota, where Betty continued to be active.

Having filled her life with the relationships and friendships she developed throughout the years, Betty played an active role in her community and in her church. She, also, participated in various groups playing cards, golfing, and bowling. Betty and Bruce enjoyed traveling the world together and spending quality time with family and friends. She had many friends, and she held them in a special place in her heart along with family. She especially cherished her grandchildren, and they her. They were pretty impressed with their grandmother when they saw her pull in an eleven pound Northern while on a Canadian fishing trip. Moreover, she was always able to out fish Bruce on their annual fishing trips. In addition, she enjoyed knitting, hardanger embroidering, playing bridge, doing crossword puzzles, and reading. The later activities, she enjoyed until her passing.

Betty will be missed by many family members and friends alike. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Dennis) Helseth, of Elbow Lake, Minnesota; her grandchildren, Jason (Andrea) Helseth, of Bay City, Wisconsin, Jessica (Scott) Lindahl, of Hinckley, Minnesota, Brandon (Toni) Osmundson, of Meridian, Idaho, and Shaun (Maya) Osmundson, of Portland, Oregon; her great-grandchildren, TJ and Benjamin Helseth; Isaac and Abigail Engelstad; Tyler and Tristan Lindahl; and Scott C., Lukas, Sydney, and Josef Osmundson; her brother, Dr. Donald G. Helgren, of San Francisco, California; and her brother-in-law, Dr. P. J. (Jack) Osmundson, of Rochester, Minnesota; as well as by several nieces and nephews.
