Julia Marie "Julie" Nelson
(August 22, 1959 - October 27, 2014)

Julie Nelson, age 55, of Lake Mills, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014, at her home in rural Lake Mills after a 9 month battle with cancer.

Julia Marie (Kennedy) Nelson, known well to most people as Julie, was born on August 22, 1959, to James and Janice (Buckmeier) Kennedy of Armstrong, Iowa. In 1977, she graduated from Sentral High School of Fenton, Iowa. She, then, moved to Mason City, Iowa, to earn a degree from Hamilton Business College.

Julie met Gary at a dance club while living and working in Mason City. They were friends for years before they started to date. Then one night at a dance, Julie and Gary declared to each other they were meant to spend their lives together. A year later, on February 5, 1983, they married at Saint John’s Catholic Church in Bancroft, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Lisa and Taylor.

After graduating, Julie worked for Armour Foods in Mason City, Iowa. In 1986, when Gary needed more help in the family business (Nelson Chevrolet-Buick in Lake Mills, Iowa), Julie joined him as the Business Manager and as bookkeeper for the family farming operation. They worked well together as a team for many years to follow.

Julie loved spending time with family and friends, including going to the kids’ sporting events and livestock shows. She loved music and dancing. She and Gary could always be found on a dance floor somewhere. She, also, enjoyed shopping, making many shopping trips on weekends to search out some great bargains. In addition, she liked spending time with family and friends at the lake, on the boat, or at the beach.

Julie enjoyed dedicating her time to her church by singing in the choir, serving on boards, and as a member of circle. An active member in 4-H, she served on the 4-H committee and frequently volunteered.

Julie leaves behind her faithful and loving husband, Gary; two kids, Taylor, at NIACC in Mason City, Iowa, and Lisa, of Jackson, Minnesota; her mother, Janice Kennedy, of Armstrong, Iowa; and her siblings, John (Sue) Kennedy, of Lino Lakes, Minnesota, Joanne (Kevin) Bean, of Lake City, Iowa, and Joseph (Krista) Kennedy, of Andover, Minnesota; her mother-in-law, Florence Nelson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; her brother-in-law, Steven (Kathy) Nelson, of Lake Mills, Iowa; and her sister-in-law, Lori (Dave) Brekken, of Lake Mills, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews, a few great-nieces and nephews, additional family members, and many great friends.

She is preceded in death by her father, James Kennedy, and father-in-law, Leonard Nelson.

A Celebration of her Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Salem Lutheran Church, 401 South Lake Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Peter Soli officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Her family will greet friends from 9:30 AM until the service time at the church. The Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills is assisting the family with arrangements.
