January 2, 1929 - May 31, 2014Thompson, Iowa - Darlene Janice Johnson, 85, peacefully passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014, at the Mercy Hospice Home in Johnston, Iowa.
Darlene Johnson was born on January 2, 1929, in Thompson, Iowa, to Joe and Eva Bravick. Raised in Thompson and graduated from Thompson High School, she attended Luther College and taught at a rural school before her marriage.
On June 25, 1950, Darlene married Robert Johnson. They made their home in Thompson where they raised their three children, Renee, Chuck, and Julie. Bob and Darlene celebrated sixty-three years of marriage before Bob's death on November 3, 2013.
A homemaker while her children were young, she went to work in the Winnebago County Treasurer's Office in Forest City in 1970. After working there for twenty-one years, she retired in 1991. After her husband's death, she moved to Johnston to be close to her daughters. At the time of her death, she was residing at the Bishop Drumm Care Center.
Darlene will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and her “spunk,” even as her health declined. A wonderful cook, she took great pleasure in trying new recipes and entertaining her family and friends. A wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, she will be greatly missed by her family.
Darlene is survived by her daughter, Renee (Bill) Burchett, of Ankeny, and Renee's son Matthew, (Kriss) Nepstad, and their children, Andrew and Lucas, of Plymouth, Minnesota; her son, Chuck (Tammy) Johnson, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and their sons, Nick (Liz) Johnson, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Robert (Chelsea) Johnson, of Scottsdale; her daughter, Julie (Rick) Helps, of Johnston, and their children, Ryan (Cheri) Helps, and their son Logan, of Grimes, and Jessica (Brian) Arroyo, and their daughter, Ava, of Omaha, Nebraska; her brother, Don Bravick, of Appleton, Wisconsin, and her sister, Joan Larson, of Rochester, Minnesota, as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Wayne, Joel, and Harold; and her husband, Robert.
Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 183 2nd Avenue East, Thompson, Iowa. A gathering of friends and family will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday. Inurnment of cremains will take place in Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. Memorials may be directed to Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson or Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.
