Marlene R. Kaduce
January 17, 1936 - June 2, 2014

Forest City, Iowa - Marlene R. Kaduce, 78, of Forest City, died on Monday, June 2, 2014, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Marlene R. Kaduce was born on January 17, 1936, in Crystal Lake, Iowa, a daughter of Don and Marie (Helm) Hodson. She attended schools in Crystal Lake, graduating from Crystal Lake high School. While in school, she also played basketball. In time, she married Max James. To this union, one daughter, Susan, was born. A devoted, loving, and self-less mother, Marlene always put her own needs on hold to care for and provide for her daughter. She and Max, however, later divorced.

After returning to Forest City, Marlene worked for Don Anderson Realty, which later became M.B.T. Insurance. She continued to work there for many years. In 1979, she married Sam Kaduce at the Methodist Church in Forest City. For many years, Marlene also played an important role in her husband's repair business. In addition, they delivered motorhomes for Winnebago Industries. Together, they went all the way to Alaska as well as to other states on many memorable adventures. They packed their meals together in advance and towed vehicles, rode greyhounds, and boarded airplanes to get back home. They had many stories to share of harrowing adventures in the act of delivering motorhomes including making a lot of money while laying over in Las Vegas.

Marlene liked working to maintain their acreage as well as gardening and tending her flowers. A wonderful cook and baker, she played the piano and enjoyed bowling in her free time. A gifted artistically, she crocheted, knitted, embroidered, tatted, sewed, and quilted. A collector of Precious Moments figurines, she had about one hundred twenty-two of them.

A wonderful grandma, Marlene loved to make her grandchildren feel special. She sewed all of them a quilt after they were born. Whenever she knew they were coming for a visit, she would begin preparing goodies in advance. She would bake chocolate chip cookies and angel food cake with strawberries and make layered Jello.

Marlene and Sam loved to dance and enjoyed themselves immensely on the dance floor together. She also enjoyed her faithful companion, "Babe," the black lab. She had a way of putting up with other people’s rudeness and selfishness, giving them kindness and consideration in return. She would place her own needs on hold to please others. She enjoyed the times she spent with her family and friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her

During the last two days as Marlene struggled to hang onto life, Sam was beside her the whole time, holding her hand and talking to her. He must have told her seventy-five times, "Marlene, you are the best friend I ever had." Sam was blessed to marry Marlene. She was his best friend, and he told her that right up until the end.

Marlene will be sadly missed by her daughter, Susan (Jayme) Granata, of Tampa, Florida; her husband, Sam Kaduce, of Forest City; her step-children, Steve Kaduce, of Forest City, Kristin Kaduce, of Mankato, Minnesota, and Julie Elbert, of Sioux City; her step-grandchildren, Sam, Olivia, Sadie, Noah, Isaac Elbert, and Sophia and Giovanni Kaduce; and two brothers-in-law, Maynard and Jerry (Jolene) Kaduce.

Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Richard Hodson.

A visitation for Marlene will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 North Clark St., Forest City, Iowa. Private family graveside services will be held at Crystal Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake. Memorials may be directed to the Marlene R. Kaduce memorial fund in care of the family.
