Lloyd H. Kiewiet
(January 8, 1918 - January 7, 2014)Lloyd Kiewiet, age 95, of Buffalo Center, passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
The seventh child in a family of seven boys and three girls, Lloyd was born to William and Anna (Dirks) Kiewiet on January 8, 1918, on a farm in Colfax Township (Grundy County) near Holland, Iowa. When he was less than a year old, the family moved to a farm near Spirit Lake, Iowa, before settling on a farm south of Buffalo Center in 1923.
Lloyd graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1937 where he played on the 1936-37 Conference and State Sectional Championship basketball team. After graduating, he and his brother, Carl, boxed in area tournaments and competed in the 1939 and 1940 Golden Gloves Tournament in Des Moines. Lloyd was runner-up in his weight division.
On November 21, 1944, he married Harriet Bosworth of Manly who was teaching at Buffalo Center. They first lived on a farm south of town, and in 1947, they returned to the Kiewiet home place where they lived until 1978. Then, they moved up the road a half a mile. In due course, Lloyd and Harriet became the parents of four children: Neal, Deborah, Katherine, and Les.
Lloyd loved to farm, and he farmed the same land for ninety years, starting at the age of 5 by driving a team of horses while his father sowed oats. Last spring was the last time he got on the tractor and made a few rounds. He kept most of the tractors, machinery, and horse drawn equipment he farmed with over the years and enjoyed giving tours to visitors and explaining how things ran. For several years, he raised Belgian horses and enjoyed giving wagon and bobsled rides with his team. He always had a beautiful garden and was known for supplying family and friends with his special sweet corn in the summer, squash in the fall, and his homemade caramel corn in the winter. A life-long member of the First Congregational Church, he served as a deacon, trustee, and treasurer for several years. He also served on the co-op oil company board.
He is survived by his children and their spouses: Neal and Patricia Kiewiet, of LaGrange, Illinois, Deborah Kiewiet, of Englewood, Florida, Ken and Katherine Kiewiet Risius, of Buffalo Center, and Les and Karen Kiewiet, also of Buffalo Center; his grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Jesse Kiewiet; Matthew and Katy Kiewiet; Jared and Rachel Wollen; Jeffrey and Steven Dillavou; Chris and Ida Linden; Greg and Ashley Risius; James, Audrey and Amanda Risius; Cory and Carlenn Trunkhill; Tyson and Liz Trunkhill; Robert and Christine Feldick; Chris and Jesse Feldick; Randy and Jennifer Feldick; and Abreha and Sarah Feldick; his great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren: Zachary and Annabelle Wollen, Shaelynn Risius, Kai and Beau Trunkhill, Avery and Teagan Trunkhill, Kayne and Kaylee Feldick, Kirby Nelson; Brianna and Crystal Gambell; Kolton and Kaitlyn Essick; and Asmara, Semerra, and Isaac Atsemet; and his brother and sister-in-law Rollin “Todd”ť and Ethel Kiewiet, of Buffalo Center; as well as by many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd is preceded in death by Harriet, his wife of forty-nine years; his parents; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Henry and Lenora Kiewiet; Jacob and Ruby Kiewiet; Vernon and Daisy Kiewiet; Carl and Betty Kiewiet; and Wilbur and Marjorie Kiewiet; his sisters and brothers-in-law: George and Lillian Beaving; Donald and Charlotte Bennett; and Ted and Gwen Cohn; his sister-in-law, Marjorie Davis; his nephew, Michael Cohn; and his niece, Karen Engleman.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center with Pastors Brad DeVries and Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, January 10, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center. Interment will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
