Betty Kiel
(February 16, 1949 - January 8, 2014)

Betty Kiel, age 64, of Thompson, passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Betty Jean Kiel was born on February 16, 1949, in Orange City, Iowa, to Henry and Nellie (De Jager) Vander Veen. She attended the Orange City Christian Elementary School and then Unity Christian High School before graduating in 1968.

Betty married Arlin Kiel, the love of her life, on April 10, 1970, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, Iowa. They were, subsequently, blessed with three children.

Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, especially at their cabin at the lakes. She enjoyed reading, boating, playing cards, watching her grandchildren play, going on family vacations, and maybe occasionally trying her luck at the casino. For over twenty-five years, she worked hard as the office manager in the family business, A & B Welding, Inc.

Betty is survived by Arlin Kiel, her loving husband of forty-three years; her three children, Chad (Brenda) Kiel, of Thompson, Shelley Kiel-Elwood, of Milford, Iowa, and Tanya (Rich) Hengesteg, of Lake Mills, Iowa; five grandchildren, Dustin and Devin Kiel, Jadyn Hengesteg, and Morgan and Blaise Elwood; two brothers, Harv (Karen) Vander Veen and Marv (Beth) Vander Veen; her father- and mother-in-law, Bill and Joan Kiel; and five sisters-in-law, Wanda (George) Bowder, Cheryl (John) Hoogland, Twyla (Bob) Starkenburg, Linda (Marlin) Vander Velde, and Laura (Dave) Pluim; as well as by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a stillborn bother, Marvin; a brother, Clarence Vander Veen; a sister-in-law, Karen Vander Veen; and a brother-in-law, Calvin Kiel.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 11, 2014, at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Visitation will be on Friday, January, 10, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the church. A private family interment will take place at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, Iowa.

Memorials may be donated to the Cancer Center of America in Zion, Illinois, or to the local Food Banks/backpack programs.
