BUFFALO CENTER - Clarine O. Steinberg, 90, of Buffalo Center, died on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from complications of pneumonia at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa.

Clarine Opal Jacobson was born on June 19, 1923, the second child of Carl and Minnie Jacobson of Rake, Iowa. Sponsored by Mrs. Dorthea Jakobson, Miss Jenetta Quam, John Jakobson, and Lester Kallestad, she was baptized on July 22, 1923, into the Lincoln Congregation, O.W. Vereide Pastor.

She attended Lincoln School #1, a brick building with a coal furnace in the basement and a fun creek nearby for ice skating in the winter, just a half mile north of her farm home. A good student, she excelled in spelling and won the fourth grade spelling bee at the county contest. In 1941, she graduated from Rake High School with a class of eighteen. During this time, she also worked on the farm, milking fourteen cows, doing the wash, and taking care of her mom who had cancer and passed from this world at age fifty-nine.

Clarine met Jack Steinberg, her future husband, at a basket social where Jack purchased her basket. They married October 21, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. Until 1992 when they moved into Buffalo Center, they lived and farmed on the Steinberg home farm one mile east of town. They celebrated their fiftieth Wedding Anniversary in 1994 with Bluegrass music on the farm.

Before her marriage, Clarine worked in the Post Office in Rake, then at the Timely Mission Nursing home in Buffalo Center and as a Home Health Aide. On the farm, she assisted with milking the Brown Swiss and Holstein cows, raising the calves, farrowing litters of swine, and gathering eggs. She also loved driving the tractors in the fields and watching deer in the headlights.

Mom enjoyed many church activities with other couples including Circle, UMW, and Homebuilders. Having faced near death several times from a bleeding ulcer in the 1960s, she learned that life can be short and wished to live with a daily smile. Indeed, with their door and their hearts always open to visitors, Mom and Dad hosted many foreign visitors on the farm through 4-H, ISU, and the Heifer Project.

Mom and Dad enjoyed vacations to the New London, Minnesota, area as well as DeKalb Seed trips to fun locations. They also enjoyed many winters in Mission, Texas, at Fiesta Village, making friends from near and far. After Dad left this earth in 2001, Mom moved to Stoney Brook Village Assisted Living in West Union in 2010. There, she had great times at the card table and touring beautiful northeast Iowa.

Clarine is survived by her brother, Vernon (Georgia) Jacobson, of Rake; her sister, LaVonne Jergenson, of Rochester Minnesota; her sisters-in-law, Marcia Jacobson, of Urbandale, and Vivian Steinberg, of Rochester Minnesota; her sons, Dave and Kathy Steinberg, of Leon, and Steve and Bonnie Steinberg, of Ossian; her grandchildren and their families which include Sarah and Luke Willis (Chase, Mallory, Levi, and Jude), of Chariton; Michael Steinberg, and his fiancée, Erica Pfeiler, of Iowa City, Josh Staples (Kaleb, Sydney, and Addison), of Worthington, Ohio, and Becky and Ryan Wangsness (Savannah, Jilliane, Bo, Charlie Lu, and Colbin), of Calmar.

Mom was preceded in death by her parents, Carl & Minnie; her husband, Jack; an infant son, Rodney Allen; her brothers, Duane and Maynard; her sister-in-law, Edith Jacobson; and her brother-in-law, Obert Jergenson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Debra Devine officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center. Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 PM, Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center.
