FOREST CITY - Surrounded by her family, Shirley Thompson, 77, of Forest City, died on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Shirley Thompson, the daughter of Elwin and Hazel (Ross) Brown, was born on October 16, 1935, at Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada. She graduated from high school in Nova Scotia and continued her education at a secretarial school. She, then, worked for the U.S. Army as a secretary in Newfoundland where she met her future husband, Carroll Hanna. On September 24, 1955, she married Carroll in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Following Carroll's honorable discharge, they moved to Iowa settling on a farm near Woden where they farmed and raised their four children. On September 18, 1981, Carroll passed away. Shirley continued to live on the farm and went back to school at Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She, then, worked at the Winnebago County Courthouse until her retirement. On December 3, 1988, she married Gerald Thompson. They made their home in Forest City.

Shirley enjoyed spending time with family and friends, quilting, gardening, knitting, and crocheting. She especially enjoyed traveling which included trips to visit her children and grandchildren as well as many trips to various parts of the world.

An active former member of Grant Lutheran Church in rural Woden, Shirley served as Church Council Treasurer, WELCA, Secretary/Treasurer of her circle, church organist, and Sunday school teacher. She also belonged to a neighborhood group called KYN (Know Your Neighbor). She, later, became a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garner and LWML.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Gerald, of Forest City; four children, Douglas Hanna, of Forest City, Diane (John) Pietig, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Michael (Colleen) Hanna, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Scott (Jennifer) Hanna, of Frisco, Texas; nine grandchildren, Abbey, Nicole, Joseph, Nicholas, Andrew, Courtney, Lindsey, and Jared Hanna and Jack Pietig; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Vallieres, of Ottawa, Ontario.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Carroll; and her brothers, Weldon and Wayne.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garner with Rev. Scott Kozisek officiating. Burial will be in Grant Cemetery near Woden. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.
