FOREST CITY - Mildred Ostrander, 102, of Forest City, died on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Mildred Evelyn Ostrander, the daughter of Martin and Emma (Isaacson) Borg, was born on March 5, 1911, in Forest City. At an early age, she moved to a farm east of Forest City. She attended Ellington #3 School and graduated from Forest City High School.

Baptized in 1925, Mildred became a member of the First Baptist Church in Forest City. In her early years, she taught Sunday school, served as secretary of the Sunday school, and taught Bible school for several years. After taking the Normal Training Course, she taught rural school for six years.

In 1935, Mildred married Robert Ostrander of Thompson. For many years, they farmed in the Thompson and Buffalo Center area. Active in the farming operation, she always kept a garden and did lots of canning. For egg money, she raised chickens. Her children remember her as a "wonderful cook." Adding to her busy life, she also taught herself to play the piano. Mildred and Robert moved to Forest City in 1984.

In December of 2009, Mildred moved to the Titonka Care Center where she gained many new friends. She enjoyed her years there.

Mildred is survived by her children, Bonnie Gonzalez, of Seattle, Washington, Mary Lee (Carlyle) Kiewiet, of Forest City, Jon (Kathie) Ostrander, of Thompson, and Gloria (Richard) Bachler, of St. Charles, Missouri; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren with one more waiting to join the family; and a sister, Arlys Hendrickson, of Humboldt, Iowa.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert; her brothers, Lennea, Albert, Orville, and Kenyon; and her sisters, Ruth, Verlyene and Gloria.

Funeral services will be held at l:30 PM, Friday, June 7, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with Pastor Doug Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark Street, Forest City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.
