(April 24, 1955 - June 13, 2013)Craig Allen Porter, 58, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the Mayo Clinic Health System-Fairmont in Fairmont, Minnesota, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Craig Porter was born on April 24, 1955, in Seminole, Texas, to Stuart and Eva (Holstad) Porter. Baptized in Hobbs, New Mexico, and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minnesota, he graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1973. He, then, attended the diesel mechanics program at the Albert Lea Vocational Technical Institute. During this time, he also began working at Larson Manufacturing in Lake Mills. He continued to work there until December 2010 when he was forced to retire because of his deteriorating health.
On October 25, 1986, Craig married Gail Hoffmann at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, Iowa. Two children, Caitlin and Nathan, were born to this union.
A man of many talents and interests, Craig served as a 4H leader in the Winnebago County Shooting Sports and Lego Robotics programs, and he had a passion for history, especially the Civil War era. In April, 2012, he traveled with the Lake Mills 8th grade class to Washington, D.C., for him a dream come true. Earning a black belt in Taekwondo in November, 2010, he exemplified the value of perseverance as a character trait.
Craig is survived by his wife, Gail Hoffmann-Porter, and his children, Caitlin and Nathan Porter, all of Lake Mills, Iowa; his mother, Eva Haroldson, and his step-father, Milton Haroldson, of Glenville, Minnesota; his mother-in-law, Sharon Hoffmann, of Lake Mills, Iowa; his sister, Cathy (Steve Bonine) Porter, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; his brothers, Dennis Porter, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and David (Jean) Porter, of Aztec, New Mexico; his half-sister, Lori (Porter) Groat, of Spokane, Washington; his sister-in-law, Jean (David) Porter, of Aztec, New Mexico; his brothers-in-law, Mark (Ilene) Hoffmann, of Nevada, Iowa, Paul (Kim) Hoffmann, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Gary (Kathy) Hoffmann, of Mason City, Iowa; and his godchildren, Sandy (Nobles) Sortland, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Daniel Nobles, of Box Elder, South Dakota; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Craig was preceded in death by his father, Stuart Porter; his maternal grandparents, John and Edith Holstad; his paternal grandparents, Frank and Anna Porter; his step-grandparents Arman and Gladys Haroldson; his father-in-law, Donald Hoffmann; and his best friend, Daniel Mittag.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating. Visitation will take place between 4:00 and 8:00 PM, Monday evening, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again one hour prior to the service at the church. Cremation will take place after the funeral service and inurnment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Craig’s family suggests that memorials be given to the Winnebago County 4H Program, Winnebago County Extension Office, 183-1st Avenue E, Thompson, Iowa 50478.
