Shirley Maahs Wood
December 10, 1933 - July 2, 2019

Shirley Mae Maahs Wood was born on December 10, 1933, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Ralph Ankeny and Ida Margaret Rhine. On July 15, 1956, she married Eldon (Sonny) Maahs. They had been married for thirty-five years before he passed away on September 8, 1991. Then, on November 22, 1997, she married Elton Wood. They continued living in Whittemore until her death.

Shirley attended country school in southern Iowa and completed the sixth grade in San Diego, California, before returning to Iowa with her parents. After graduating from Lakota High School, she attended secretarial school in Omaha. Returning to the Algona area, she worked at the Kossuth County Courthouse.

A homemaker while her children were growing, Shirley worked as a bookkeeper at Martin's Garage in Whittemore for ten years and at the Algona Veterinary Clinic for thirty years. She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, crocheting, and playing cards with friends. An avid Iowa State Cyclone Fan as well, she, always, enjoyed their games. Moreover, she cherished spending time, especially during the holidays, with her family and in particular with her grandchildren.

Shirley placed her faith at the center of her life. An active member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church for over sixty years, she volunteered in many capacities and served on the church council.

On Tuesday, July 2, 2019, Shirley Maahs Wood, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away at the Kossuth Reginal Health Center, Algona. She was 85.

Shirley is survived by husband, Elton Wood; her daughter, Judy (Rich) Vratny, of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; her son, Jim (Marlaine) Maahs, of St. Paul, Minnesota; her grandchildren, whom she loved immensely: Amanda Bucy; Ella, Kate, Max, and Will Maahs; and Ashley Vratny; her sibling, Gloria Cruse and Elton's families: Greg Wood, Jeff and Deann Wood, Cindy and Dave Humke, Joe and Valerie Wood. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings: Pauline Wilson, Doris Hulme, Dorothy Weaver, and Homer and Joe Ankeny.
