Jerry L. Winter
October 9, 1937 - June 23, 2019

Surrounded by his wife, Marlene, and his four children, Jerry Winter, a longtime resident of Rake, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

Jerry was born on October 9, 1938, in Rake, Iowa, to Bud (John) and Marian Winter. He married Marlene Murphy, his wife of sixty-one years, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Guckeen, Minnesota. They lived in Rake where they raised four children: Lori (Bruce) Van Gerpen, of Rake, Teresa (Kevin) Griffith, of Lehigh, Kent (Neda) Winter, of Calabasas, California, and Nikki (Jed) Hunsader, of Belle Plaine, Minnesota.

A well known and forever grateful resident in the area, he could, only, stand in awe after receiving over 600 get-well cards following a massive heart attack in 2003. For many years, Jerry was recognized for his high school athletic abilities, especially with basketball in which he helped lead Rake High School's 1954-55 team, then Iowa's fourth smallest school to a sub-state clash with Iowa's fourth largest school from Marshalltown. More recently, Jerry played fast pitch softball and refereed basketball.

Jerry and Marlene viewed Sundays as a special time although they didn't always attend the same service. Marlene, a faithful Catholic, would go to church; Jerry a golfer, would head for a course. Indeed, for many years, Jerry was on the courses at Elmore and Buffalo Center where he was easily spotted with his pipe either in his mouth or resting beside his ball. In his later years, Jerry was always the first one ready as he eagerly joined Marlene and family for Mass.

In later years, he enjoyed visiting his granddaughters, Anna and Leah, in Germany and California and locally watching his grandchildren, Chris, Jessica, and Allison, compete in sports at North Iowa High School or Andrew and Benjamin in Belle Plaine, Minnesota. He was their biggest fan.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Howard and Irene Murphy, and his beloved grandson, Terry. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; his four children; his brothers, Mark (Carol) and Don (Joan) Winter; his sister, Cheri (Jerry) Kester; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
