Muriel E. Rognes, age 96, died on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Muriel Elaine (Petersburg) Rognes was born on the family farm near Joice, Iowa, on August 24, 1922, to Edwin and Mabel (Suby) Petersburg. Baptized and confirmed at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, she grew up on the family farm with four brothers. After attending country school, she graduated from Joice High School. Muriel married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Oswald Rognes, on February 26, 1943, at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. To their union, five children were born: Michael, Dennis, Linda, Becky, and Todd.

Muriel loved her role as a homemaker and mother, raising her family on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking, especially lefse and kringla. She loved to quilt and crochet and made quilts and afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. She and Ozzie belonged to Salem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in WELCA. Later in life, she enjoyed living at Rice Lake and spending her winters in Texas with Ozzie. Late in life, After taking up golf, she scored two “holes-in-one.” She enjoyed playing games and spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and of course, her friends.

Muriel is survived by her sons, Michael (Jean) Rognes, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Dennis (LuAnne) Rognes, of Lake Mills, Iowa, and Todd (Susan) Rognes, of Clear Lake, Iowa; her daughters, Linda (Maury) Hope, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Becky (Steve) Johnson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; ten grandchildren: Matt (Laura Zaugg) Hope; Scott Johnson; Chandler, Charles (Jamie), Elizabeth (Jason Johnson), Paul (Becky), Kjersti, and Reed Rognes; Ellie (Garret) Schumaker; and Stephanie (Jeff) Summy; twelve great-grandchildren: Landon Johnson; Nelson and Ingrid Rognes-Johnson; Leah, Lindsey, and Raelynn Rognes; Owen Schumaker; Jackson, Grant, Cooper, Cal, and Henry Summy; one brother, Floyd (Marian) Petersburg, of Clear Lake; and six sisters-in-law: Junice Bang, Norma Barville, Shirley Petersburg, Rosella Purcell, and Loretta and Colleen Rogness; as well as by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by Oswald Rognes, her husband of seventy-six years; her parents; a grandson, Mark Rognes; three brothers: Donald, James (Bud), and Marlin Petersburg; and her father- and mother-in-law, Alfred and Jenette Rognes; as well as by other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Inurnment will take place at Beaver Creek Cemetery at a later time. Visitation will be on Monday, July 22, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to MercyOne Hospice, 232-2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401, or to the Beaver Creek Cemetery Association, C/O Jerry Fjeld, 3770 Bluebill Avenue, Joice, Iowa 50446.
