Lanny Mearld Pierce, Sr.
February 5, 1949 - April 12, 2019

Lanny M. Pierce, Sr., age 70, of Joice, died on Friday, April 12, 2019, at his home.

Lanny was born on February 5, 1949, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Mearld and Elizabeth (Stevens) Pierce. After attending high school in Thompson, Iowa, he was drafted into the US Army on May 27, 1971, and served in Vietnam as an executive chef. While in the Army, he earned many medals including the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal as well as earning a classification as a sharpshooter, M14. He was honorably discharged on February 10, 1975. Lanny’s kitchen skills didn’t end in the Army; he made a career of supervising kitchens, primarily in nursing homes such as the Lake Mills Care Center. He loved the people he worked with and enjoyed the company of the residents. In addition, Lanny had many different jobs through the years, but he, really, enjoyed the time he spent working on a ranch in Oregon where he formed many memories with his son, Lanny, Jr.

On May 4, 1994, Lanny married Sally (Arnold) Hartkopp. They made a family sharing five children, twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

In his free time, Lanny could be found in his woodworking shop doing projects with his great-grandchildren. He handcrafted many beautiful keepsakes for all the members of his family to cherish. Moreover, Lanny and Sally liked to camp, fish, work in their yard, and take their MG convertible out for a drive.

Lanny is survived by his wife of twenty-four years, Sally, of Joice, Iowa; five children: Lanny (Steph) Pierce, Jr., Nichole (Paul) Pierce, Lance Hartkopp, Curtis (Nancy) Leverton, and Christen (Bruce) Shipman; twelve grandchildren: Justin Dana; Brett (Christina) Funk; Ashley Helsey; Halogloe and Tazabella Leverton; Casey, Cole, Owen, Savannah, and Zoe Pierce; Lance (Steph) Saturday; and David Shipman; five great-grandchildren: Rain Dana; and Maddox and Orion Funk; and Aurora and Xander Henn; a sister, Shirley Mason; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Pierce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mearld and Elizabeth Pierce; and two brothers, Larry and Darrell Pierce.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at the Asbury United Methodist, 107 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Rob Lanphere officiating. The family will be at the church during the hour before the service to greet friends. Military honors will be conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235 from Lake Mills.
