Joyce L. Kilen
February 17, 1929 - May 4, 2019

Joyce L. Kilen, age 90, died on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Joyce was born on February 17, 1929, to Joseph and Genevieve (Walrath) Madson in Britt, Iowa. After graduating from school in Lake Mills, she enrolled at Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she earned her teaching certificate. Subsequently, she taught country school before her children were born.

On June 17, 1949, Joyce married Gordon H. Kilen in St. Paul, Minnesota. To their union, four sons were born. She lived and helped on the farm and also worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Lake Mills Care Center for twenty-five years.

She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, reading a good book, listening to music, and spending time with her family and friends. Joyce will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Because she enjoyed helping the less fortunate, she, along with her husband, Gordy, donated her time and efforts to County Cousins, an organization that collected and donated clothing for those in need.

Joyce is survived by her four sons: Glenn (Darlene) Kilen, of Rochester, Minnesota, John Kilen, of Lake Mills, Jim Dietz-(Catherine) Kilen, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dan (Kathy) Kilen, of Eldridge, Iowa; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her siblings, Denny Madson, of Lake Mills, and Jeri (Jim) Beshey; and her sisters-in-law: Marianne and Jeanette Madson and Hilma (Loren) Stover, as well as by many other extended relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gordon H. Kilen, in 2011; and her siblings: Art and Robert “Pete” Madson and Joan Haag as well as by many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 9, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the services at the church on Thursday. Interment will follow in Salem Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church or for the Joyce Kilen Appreciation Fund to be donated to the Lake Mills Care Center staff. The family would like to thank all the staff for the love and care shown to Joyce.
