Harold Edward Halvorson
August 12, 1934 - May 3, 2019Harold E. Halvorson, age 84, of Lake Mills, formerly of rural Northwood, died on Friday, May 03, 2019, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.
Harold was born on August 12, 1934, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Lawrence and Millie (Loberg) Halvorson. He attended Somber Christian Day School through the eighth grade and then Lake Mills High School, graduating in 1952. On June 17, 1956, he married Mavis J. Harang at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. To this union two daughters, Jill and Rachel were born. In 1957, Harold was drafted into the United States Army. Following his honorably discharged in 1958, he took over the family farm which was registered as a Century Farm in 1976. He milked cows until 1997 and continued to run the rest of the farm until 2015. In 1997, he made a trip to Norway with his wife and her siblings and their spouses, a highlight of his life.
Harold was known for helping neighbors any time they needed it, showing off pictures of his granddaughters, throwing out an occasional Norwegian phrase and tinkering with cars and tractors or anything else that needed fixing, especially if he could use his welding skills. He loved spending time with his friends and family, especially with his granddaughters, who remember him for his singing in church, his infectious smile, and his tantalizing laugh. He will, indeed, be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mavis Halvorson, of Lake Mills; his daughters, Jill Halvorson, of rural Northwood, and Rachel (Richard) Bowman, of Lake Mills; three grandchildren: Rylee, Robyn, and Rori Bowman; and his brother, Wayne Halvorson, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; as well as by several nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jeanette (Bendickson) Harmon.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at the Lake Mills Synod Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he remained a lifelong member, at 107 North 1st Avenue East, with Pastors David Emmons and Wayne Halvorson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235. Visitation will be on Friday, May 10, 2019, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Somber Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
