Paul Ingvald Grimsbo
December 9, 1927 - April 16, 2019Paul I. Grimsbo, age 91, of rural Lake Mills, died on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at the Westview Care Center in Britt, Iowa.
Paul Ingvald Grimsbo was born on December 9, 1927, to Ingvald and Christie (Degnepold) Grimsbo in his Degnepold Grandparents' home in rural Scarville, Iowa. He was baptized on January 8, 1928, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Vinje, Iowa, and confirmed on May 10, 1942, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, Iowa, by Rev. S.J. Fretheim. The family lived near Palisade, Minnesota, until Paul was four years old. They, then, moved to their farm in Norway Township, rural Lake Mills, Iowa.
Paul began his education in the Anderson School in Norway Township and continued in the Emmons Public School in Emmons, Minnesota. On September 23, 1946, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, Minnesota. After basic training, he left for Japan, arriving in Yokohama on January 8, 1947. After his honorable discharge on January 8, 1948, he returned home to farm with his father until they both retired.
On June 20, 1952, Paul married Lorraine Stalheim from Twin Lakes, Minnesota, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Albert Lea. They, then, moved to a farm near Scarville where they continued to live for the next sixty-seven years. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Pamela and Channing.
An active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church throughout his life, Paul served on the church council as well as other committees. Because he loved music, he taught himself to play the piano and organ. A car and truck enthusiast, he spent many hours working on repairs in his machine shop. With a big yard, he, also, spent a lot of time on his lawn mower.
A member of the Sons of Norway Lodge and the Sunnfjord Organization in America, he treasured his Norwegian heritage. Knowing he had many relatives in Norway, he and Lorraine as well as other family members paid a visit there in 1974, which marked the beginning of many visits to Norway and return visits from relatives coming here.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Paul is survived by his wife, Lorraine; his daughter, Dr. Pamela (Dr. Terry) Kapple, of Parnell, Iowa; his son, Channing (Elisabeth) Grimsbo, of Indianola, Iowa; five grandchildren: Lydia Grimsbo, of Indianola, Iowa, Benjamin Kapple, of Parnell, Iowa, Brant Kapple, of Manhattan, New York, Tate Kapple, of Spokane, Washington, and Sarah (John) Pierce, of Evansville, Indiana; a great-granddaughter, Hannah Pierce; a sister, Eleanor Dille, of Newton, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Norlan (Betty) Stalheim; and a sister-in-law, Leona Bjelland, both of Albert Lea, Minnesota; as well as by several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Minnesota, Iowa, and Norway. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ingvald and Christie.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 22, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Scarville, Iowa, with Pastor Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Vinje, Iowa, with military honors conducted by the Otto Chose Post #235. Visitation for Paul is scheduled for one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 105 East 3rd Street, Scarville, Iowa 50473.
