August 12, 1930 - February 8, 2019Eugene Paul Sauer, 88, of Thompson, Iowa, died on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa
Eugene was born on August 12, 1930, in Wells, Minnesota, to Reginald G. and Louise (Gerlitz) Sauer. He attended and then graduated from New Richland High School in 1948. While in high school, he worked at his parents’ gas station. Next, he attended Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, graduating in 1952 with a degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on Accounting.
On October 9, 1954, Gene married Wilma Wittrock at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lakefield, Minnesota, and to their union, one daughter, Nancy, was born. Gene worked for a short time for St. Paul Hydraulic Hoist, and then, he and Wilma moved to Thompson, Iowa, where he started work as the accountant for REC. In addition, he served as the office manager at REC for several years and retired in October of 1995 as the general manager after forty-one years of service. Then, he enjoyed providing transportation for people to their appointments.
While living in Thompson, Gene took great pride in keeping his home and garden immaculate. For seventeen years, he served on the Thompson City Council and for five years as the treasurer for the Thompson Schools. A long-time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thompson, he, also, belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.
Gene liked to travel; he had many great memories of the family visiting many cities in Europe and of meeting Wilma's ancestors in Germany. Of particular importance for him, he attended the seventieth reunion of his class in New Richland in September of 2018. Otherwise, Gene loved his cocker spaniel dogs through the years, especially Skip, and his childhood dog, Pepper. A wonderful loving husband and father, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Sauer, of Algona; his daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Jack Bowen, also of Algona; his sister, Neva Mathison, of Albert Lea; his brother, Reg Sauer, of Delmar, New York; his sister-in-law, DeEtta Young-Erickson, of Owatonna, Minnesota; his nieces: Val (Daryl) Hanzal, Julie (Sunday) Aikoriegie, Sandy (Kyle) Goodrich, LaNette Reynolds, and Gail (Dave) Swenson; and his nephews, Doug (JoAnne) Mathison and Scott (Ellen) Sauer; as well as by cousins and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife’s parents; his brothers-in-law: Fred, Roy, Willis, and Don; his sisters-in-law, Anne and Hazel; and his nephew, Brian.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, February 15, 2019, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will follow in Rice Lake Cemetery, rural Wells Minnesota. Beginning at 9:30 A.M., visitation will continue until the time of the services at the church on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
