Lanny "Skip" Seaton
October 19, 1939 - December 23, 2017Lanny “Skip” Eugene Seaton passed away on December 23, 2017, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 1:30 PM at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Chad Huebner officiating.
Skip was born in Strahan, Iowa, on October 19, 1939, to Daniel and Gertrude (Marshall) Seaton. Having grown up in Carroll and Indianola, Iowa, he graduated from Indianola High School and attended Simpson College for two years before being drafted into the United States Army. Skip and Carolyn married on August 5, 1961, at the Fort Des Moines Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. They lived in Forest City, Iowa, where he worked for Winnebago Industries and then as Manager of Fowser’s Men’s Clothing. Leaving Forest City, Skip and Carolyn moved first to Churdan, Iowa, and then to Montezuma, Iowa, where he worked for Brownell’s. While in Montezuma, Skip, proudly served as Chairman for, as well as a participate in, the Relay for Life, 5K events. In 2008, Skip and Carolyn retired to Arkansas, and then, in the summer of 2016, they moved to Decorah, Iowa.
Skip loved working in his yard, golfing, playing racquetball, and reading- especially good Westerns, and he grilled the best hamburgers! In addition, he liked to play board games and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. As an adolescent, he loved to play basketball, but as an adult, he preferred following sports on television. Meticulous with his lawn care and snow removal, he would, also, spend hours making sure he had his garage organized just right. Known for kidding around, he made friends wherever he went. A patriot, he joined American Legion Post #344 in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas. A religious man, he will be, greatly, missed by all who knew him.
Skip is survived by Carolyn, his wife of fifty-six years; his daughter, Sarah (Phil) Nowack, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; his son, Marcus (Jennifer) Seaton, of Ellsworth, Iowa; his grandchildren: Leila, Paige, Bianca, and Yandell Seaton; and his brother, Robert (Mary Ellen) Seaton, of Edison, New Jersey; as well as by several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Gertrude Seaton; and his brother, Danny Seaton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, c/o Decorah Vets Club, 104 State Street, Decorah, Iowa 52101.
