Naomi Mary (Shortenhaus) Garst passed away on Tuesday, December 26, 2017, at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, Iowa, at the age of 93.

Naomi, a daughter of Harm and Grace (Gilbert) Shortenhaus, was born on the family farm in rural Buffalo Center on May 14, 1924. Baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa, she became an active lifelong memberof that church. After graduating from Buffalo Center High School in 1941, she attended Iowa State University, finishing with a degree in Home Economics. Next, she moved to Illinois and taught school for five years.

On June 4, 1949, she married Clarence "Zeke" Garst at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center. To their union, two sons were born: Clarence ("Ike") and Gary. A very loving and giving mother, wife, and grandmother, she, always, looked out for the best interests of her children, encouraging them to further their education.

Naomi loved spending time with her family and following her children and grandchildren in all of their activities. She, also, enjoyed working on the farm, mowing, cooking, fishing, and visiting friends in northern Minnesota as well as getting together with friends locally. She attempted to remember everyone's birthday by always sending a card. An avid Iowa State fan, she enjoyed following sports, especially football and basketball.

She is survived by her son, Gary (Debby) Garst, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; her grandchildren: Matthew (Sheryl) Garst, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and their children: George, Audrey, and Morgan; Mark Garst, of Lakota, Iowa, and his children: Bailee, Zeke, and Franklin; Carmen (Ryan) Criddle, of Claremont, Minnesota, and their children, Isaac and James; her daughter-in-law, Lucy Garst, of Littleton, Colorado; her grandchildren: Beth Garst, of Littleton, Colorado, and Nicole (Chuck) Forsythe, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and their son Colin; Ashley (Sam Opp) Garst, of Arvada, Colorado; and her sisters-in-law, Gladys Shortenhaus, of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and Ruth Shortenhaus, of Sioux City, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Those preceding her in death include her husband, Clarence "Zeke;" her parents; her son, Clarence "Ike;" and her brothers, Harry and Leon Shortenhaus.
