Ronald Earl Zimmerman, 75, died on Monday, October 16, 2017, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Ron was born on July 1, 1942, to Godfrey M. and Esther A. (Kamrath) Zimmerman in the Canby Hospital in Canby, Minnesota. Growing up on a farm west of Porter in Lincoln County, Minnesota, he attended the elementary grades in Porter and graduated from Canby High School in Canby, Minnesota. Along with his two older brothers, Dale and Roger, he attended Zacchaeus Lutheran Church in Canby where he had been baptized and confirmed. Continuing his education, he enrolled at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, where he graduated in 1966 with a degree in Pharmacy. While in college, he joined ROTC. After completing his college education, he enlisted in the Air Force, serving at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. At the time of his discharge, he had risen to the rank Sergeant 1st Class. With his military service behind him, Ron worked at drug stores in McLaughlin, South Dakota, Marshalltown, Iowa, and Britt, Iowa. In 1986, however, he purchased a drug store in Lake Mills, naming it “Zimm’s Drug.” A well-known businessman in Lake Mills, he retired in 2004.

Ron enjoyed gardening including tending his flowers. Often, he traveled in the west and once made a trip to Germany and Switzerland. In addition, he liked to spend his free time with his family and friends. To that end, he, frequently, went hunting with his dad and friends. At one time, he, even, owned a small sailboat. After retiring, he became active in the Otto Chose Post #235 in Lake Mills, taking part in many funerals while serving on the honor guard.

Survivors include his brother, Dale, and his wife, Dorothy Zimmerman, of Porter, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Janice Zimmerman, of Canby, Minnesota; five nieces; and two very special friends, David Anderson and Linda Severson, both of Lake Mills. He was preceded in death by his parents, Godfrey and Esther, and a brother, Roger.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Kermit Singelstad officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Lake Mills Otto/Chose American Legion Post #235. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial and Graveside Service will follow at 1:30 PM, Friday, October 27, 2017, at the Canby City Cemetery, 190th Street (US 75), Canby, Minnesota 56220.
