April 28, 1939 - October 2, 2017Gene P. Vajgert, 78, of Leland, died on Monday, October 2, 2017, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Gene Vajgert, a son of Donald and Grace Lee Vajgert, was born on April 28, 1939, in Marshalltown, Iowa. After the death of his first wife, he married Elizabeth Anne Buren on February 28, 1999, at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City. He and Liz enjoyed traveling to Austin, Texas, through the years to visit his mother. For many years, he worked at Larson Window and Door in Lake Mills. Later, he worked at Bill’s Family Foods in Forest City as a baker, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. A pet fancier, Gene loved his cats and his Doxen, Roberta. He will be, dearly, missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gene is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Vajgert of Leland; his brother, Gordon Vajgert, of Mason City; his mother, Grace Lee, of Austin, Texas; his sisters-in-law, Francisca Vajgert, of Dripping Springs, Texas, and Raye Vajgert, of Austin, Texas; his daughter, Mary Buren (Brian Eden), of Joice, Iowa; and his son, Paul Strehlow, and his wife of Lawton, Oklahoma, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his father; his first wife, Jean Marie Vajgert, and two brothers, George and Gary Vajgert.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 4, 2017, at the Cataldo Schott Funeral Chapel, 505 North Clark Street, Forest City, Iowa. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Word of Faith Dominion Church, 45005 210th Ave., Lake Mills, Iowa, with Pastors Doug Domokos and Steve Johnson officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Gene Vajgert memorial fund.
