Robert James "Jim" Tweed
August 16, 1930 - October 02, 2017

James “Jim” Tweed, age 87, of Lake Mills, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2017, at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Iowa, from complications of dementia.

Jim Tweed was born to Otis and Florence (Nelson) Tweed at home south of Joice, Iowa, on August 16, 1930. Baptized on September 7, 1930, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, he graduated from Joice High School in 1948. On November 2, 1952, he married Doris Anderson at Salem Lutheran Church. For the past twenty-five years, they resided in Lake Mills except for spending their winters in Mission, Texas. Jim began his career as an engineer with Delux Products before moving on to Fleetguard Industries and finally to Cummins Filtration, eventually retiring from that company as a process engineering manager.

Jim had a passion for baseball. A superb pitcher, he played with many local teams. At one time, he was offered a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers, but he declined because of his commitments with the Army National Guard. In addition, Jim enjoyed golfing (he had three holes-in-one), hunting, and fishing with family and friends. He, also, liked almost daily road trips with his life-long friend, Vern Hagen.

A member of Salem Lutheran Church and of the Salem Brotherhood, Jim served as president of the congregation and on the finance committee. In addition, he taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the Salem choir. He, also, took an active role in the Lake Mills community. He engineered the Fjelstad sports complex, taught baseball skills to pee-wees and midgets, played an instrumental role in building the Habitat for Humanity home in our community, and had served as Grand Marshall (along with his wife) of the July Jubilee.

Survivors include Doris, his loving wife of 64 years; his daughter Jennifer, of Des Moines; his granddaughter, Erin (Eric) Wood; his great-granddaughters, Kirstin and Hailey; and his daughter-in-law, Amy Tweed, all of Albany, New York; his sisters and brothers, Phyllis Arneson, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, Lois Reinsmoen, of Greene, Iowa, Herschel (Jean) Tweed, of Scottsdale, Arizona, Dianne (Jim) Coburn, of Reno, Nevada, and Dennis (Dee) Tweed, of Rochester, Minnesota; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Vincent; his sister, Janell Slattum; three brothers-in-law, Richard Arneson, Orland Reinsmoen, and Richard Slattum; two nephews; and a niece.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, October 6, 2017, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor Joel Guttormson officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., Thursday, October 5, 2017, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church. Cremation will follow the funeral service with inurnment in Salem Memorial Cemetery on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood, Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, or Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills.
