January 06, 1918 - August 27, 2017Eileen G. Hengesteg, 99, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 27, 2017, at the Lake Mills Care Center.
A daughter of Frank and Gertrude (Carey) Lair, Eileen Gertrude Hengesteg was born on January 8, 1918, in rural Freeborn County, Minnesota. Then, in 1936, she graduated from Emmons High School. On March 17, 1938, St. Patrick’s Day, she married Ernie G. Hengesteg. A homemaker in the truest sense of the word, she loved her family, worked alongside her husband, raised ten children, baked a lot of bread, worked as a seamstress, and loved her church. The rock of the family, she guided her loved ones through all that life threw at them.
She is survived by her children: Donald (Judy) Hengesteg, Kay Kirschbaum, and Mary Jo (Phillip) Wogen, all of Lake Mills, Iowa; Robert (Marg), Steve (Carol) and Charles (Bonnie) Hengesteg, and Judie Adams, all of Northwood, Iowa; and Jean (Curtiss) Pint, of Dickeyville, Wisconsin; twenty-seven grandchildren; sixty-three great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; her brother, James Lair, of Albert Lea, Minnesota; her sister-in-law, Hazel Hengesteg, of Rochester, Minnesota; and a special friend, Kandy Schupe; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981; two sons, Richard and Bruce; a grandson, Rick Hengesteg; a great-grandson, Scott Midlang; her brothers, Francis and Webster; her sisters, Betty Martinson, Margie McKay, and Maxine Lair; and son-in-law, Frank Adams.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 406 S. Grant Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, with Father James Dubert officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Tuesday evening, with a prayer service at 4:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450, and again for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in rural Lake Mills, Iowa.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 2nd Street SE, Mason City, Iowa 50401, or to St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, 406 S. Grant Street, Lake Mills, Iowa 50450.
