Clifton Delile Charlson
September 28, 1935 - June 09, 2017Surrounded by his family, Clifton Delile Charlson, 81, of Algona, Iowa, died at the Good Samaritan Center on Friday, June 09, 2017.
Clifton was born on September 28, 1935 in Whittemore, Iowa. He grew up in Joice, Iowa, on an eighty-acre farm. Not particularly liking farm life, he entered the Navy in 1956. After four years of active duty, he served two more years in the reserves. A very patriotic veteran, he, proudly, flew the American flag his entire life.
Clifton worked in construction through the Midwest and Rocky Mountains after his Naval commitment. In 1969, he settled in West Covina, California, and went to work in the mining industry. He retired from United Rock Products, a Southern California mining operation, after twenty-three years of service operating a bull dozer.
An accomplished poker player, Clifton could find a game wherever he went. In addition, he loved riding his motorcycle, so much so that after a nephew, Daryl Charlson, moved to California, he bought another bike so they could ride together. After retiring, he moved to Golden Valley, Arizona, for the beautiful mountains and four-wheel drive expeditions. Clifton never married or had children. However, he held a special place in his heart for Roberta (Engstrom) Durand, a niece. She wrote him letters faithfully over all the years. He loved her as if she were his own daughter. Moreover, he loved his family and friends. If anyone ever needed a helping hand, he was always willing to pitch in.
Clifton is survived by his sisters, Louise M. (Charlson) Engstrom, Darlene L. (Charlson) Heerdt, Genora A. (Charlson) Thomas, Marilyn J. (Charlson) Nonnweiler, and Delores J. (Charlson) Werly; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys Charlson; and his brothers: Martin O., Willard B., Virgel L., and Robert D. Charlson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 17, 2017, at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Visitation with his family will be on Friday, June 16, 2017, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home and will continue for one hour before the service on Saturday.
