Richard "Dicky' Byron Throne
March 19, 1938 - May 15, 2017

Richard Byron “Dicky” Throne, age 79, of Vinje, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 15, 2017, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

A son of C. Martin and Hazel (Larson) Throne, Dicky was born on March 9, 1938, at home in Emmons, Minnesota. Baptized and confirmed at Emmons Lutheran Church, he graduated from Emmons High School in 1956.

On June 27, 1958, Dicky married Karen Leanne Sunde at Bethel Lutheran Church in Vinje. They resided and farmed at rural Vinje where they raised their six children. He served on various co-op and elevator boards, committees, and the church council. Right out of high school, he worked at RILCO Laminated Products in Albert Lea. Then, he began farming with his brother-in-law until he acquired his own farm which he worked for more than fifty years.

Dicky never had a bad cup of coffee unless it was missing a conversation. He was well known for his ability to diagnose any mechanical problem 24/7 and as a competitive tractor pull champion. He loved all types of racing from go-carts to snowmobiles to NASCAR. Although people knew him as a farmer and master mechanic, he leaves a legacy for his family of the satisfaction gained from hard work. A thinker and seeker of knowledge, an innovator, he, always, had to know the "HOW" and “WHY.” Many loved him for his humor, wit, and generous spirit, a man who always reached a hand down to lift another up, and felt a responsibility to treat others as he wanted to be treated.

He is survived by Karen, his loving wife of fifty-nine years; three sisters, Lois (John) Duff, of Alva, Florida, Marlene (Robert) Sorenson, of Decorah, and Audrey Whitney, also of Alva, Florida; his son, Michael (Melanie), of Vinje, and their children: Christopher (Sara), Peyton, and Brooklyn, of Lake Mills, Taylor, of Downers Grove, Illinois, Matthew, of Maple Grove, Minnesota, and Zachary and Kristyn, of Vinje; his daughter, Robin (Kent), of the Quad Cities, and her daughter, Sarah (Decker), of Le Claire; his daughter Carol’s sons, Angel, of Lake Mills, and Danilo (friend Karralyn) and Tatum, of Riverside; his daughter, Merna, of St. James City, Florida; his son, Brian (Deb), and their son, Jeremi (fiancée Ashley) and Alana, of Lake Mills; and his daughter, Teresa (Robert) Feldmann, of Williamsburg, and their children Justin (Emily) Aanrud, and Graham, and Jessica (Cody) Gabriel and Stella Jo, Parnell, and Jordan, all of Williamsburg; as well as by many, many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Carol; his brother-in-law, James Whitney; his sister- and brother-in-law, Leonora “Tudy” and Harold Grunhovd; his brother-in-law, Duane Sunde; his sister-in-law, Merna Sunde; and his father- and mother-in-law, Henry and Ruby Sunde.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 22, 2017, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 15722 490th Street, Scarville, Iowa, with Pastor Doug Domokos officiating. Burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 East Main Street, Lake Mills, and will continue for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
